When Terrell Owens is smiling, he's a productive force in the Cowboys' offense.
Sunday night, Owens was dancing, smiling and catching touchdown passes in the Cowboys' season-opening victory over the Giants at Texas Stadium. Owens finished the game with three catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns, all in the second half.
Owens didn't have a big night like tight end Jason Witten (six catches for 116 yards and one touchdown), but his two scores provided the spark the team needed. "We were still moving the offense," said receiver Patrick Crayton, who had three catches for 51 yards. "You see what happens when he joins the party."
Owens' second touchdown reception was a result of what the Cowboys want to do with him this season.
He lined up in the slot, something he didn't do a lot last season. He sprinted toward the middle of the field, caught a pass from Romo, made safety James Butler miss a tackle and outran Gibril Wilson to the end zone. The score increased the Cowboys' lead to 38-22.
"We've talked about moving me around a little bit," Owens said. "That's the nature of this offense. We have a lot of versatile guys, and we will move each other around."
He had no catches in the first half, although he did have four passes thrown his way by Romo.
At one point in the first half, Romo tapped Owens on the helmet and told him to hang in there.
On the sidelines, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who said one of his goals is to make sure Owens gets the ball, had a lengthy discussion on the bench with the receiver.
In the second half, things changed.
"Yeah, first half was sort of like a matinee," Owens said smiling. "You let everybody sit in the seats and then I get my chance to shine a little bit. "But overall, I thought we did a great job. I know I have to be patient, and I know the nature of this offense will be like that where I may catch many balls or one or two in the first half."
