IRVING, Texas - Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips needed his young receivers to step up Terry Glenn injured, and second-year wideout Sam Hurd provided that boost late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's regular-season opener.

Hurd took a Tony Romo slant 51 yards for a touchdown, ending a late Giants rally and preserving the Cowboys' 45-35 victory at Texas Stadium.

Romo's pass to Hurd was his fourth touchdown of the night. He and Terrell Owens connected for touchdowns of 22 and 47 yards, and the Cowboys' quarterback added a rushing score to build a commanding 38-22 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Giants closed the gap to 38-35 with back-to-back touchdown passes from Eli Manning, the second following a Romo interception in Cowboys territory. But Hurd's touchdown ended a potential comeback.

Romo finished 15-of-24 for 345 yards and five total touchdowns.

Injuries plagued both teams, however. The Giants lost starting running back Brandon Jacobs for the game with a sprained knee, and on defense, Cowboys starting nose tackle Jason Ferguson (right elbow) and Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) did not return. X-rays on Umenyiora were negative.

Manning also left late in the game with a shoulder bruise.

As expected, wide receiver Patrick Crayton replaced Glenn (inactive - knee) in the starting lineup, with Hurd entering the game in three-wide sets.

Glenn suffered a new injury to his right knee in Wednesday's practice, his first since undergoing arthroscopic surgery Aug. 1 to remove a tiny cyst from the back of his kneecap. Before the game on The Ticket (KTCK-AM, 1310), Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Glenn still is mulling whether to have a scope to repair cartilage, which would put him out a few weeks, or undergo season-ending microfracture surgery.

Other inactives for the Cowboys include linebacker Greg Ellis; safety Courtney Brown; offensive linemen Joe Berger, Doug Free and James Marten; and wide receiver Isaiah Stanback.

Cornerback Jacques Reeves, made his second career start in place of Terence Newman (partially torn plantar fascia) and helped set up a second-quarter touchdown by intercepting Manning.

Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, who returned to practice earlier this week following a preseason holdout, is active but did not start.

I think this would be a more appropriate byline;

Garrett's offense results in explosion of points...as does Wade's lack of effective pass rush defense.

MCAJE, you should write editorial pieces for your local paper. You are very clever.
Did you ever work in journalism in the military?

I have written a few...liberals hate em'! My favorite was "Cost of freedom is always high" quoting JFK.

Did you ever work in journalism in the military?

Nope. Strictly Nuclear Weapons.

hey anytime you drop a quote from a democratic President implying that some military action is sometimes a necessity, you are GOING TO piss off a liberal! LOL
Well, keep launching those "nukes" with your pen. ;)
