View Full Version : Reche Caldwell cut by New England

After adding Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, and Wes Welker to their receiving corps, the Patriots decided to part ways with last year's leader Reche Caldwell. While I think Dallas is solid at the position, I think Caldwell would be a great signing for us. Here's why:
1. We're going to miserable if Owens or Glenn was hurt for any significant period of time. Caldwell would be an awesome insurance policy for a championship-minded team with two older players at receiver.
2. You bring in Caldwell now, and you don't have to rush Glenn back on to the field from his current injury. He doesn't replace Glenn's speed, but he'd give you an experienced player who could learn the offense quickly and scare opposing defenders more than Sam Hurd would.
3. He and Patrick Crayton are actually the same age (28) and are very similar receivers. Not that I don't love Crayton, but Caldwell has an experience edge both in big games and as a team's number one receiver. Seems like an upgrade to me.
4. Another point on Crayton; the guy's a free agent next year. If you bring in Caldwell now for a modest contract, Dallas has more leverage when it's time to negotiate with Crayton. They can even let him walk if needs be.
5. Hurd and Stanback are already young experimental players with great potential. I think Austin is just a future cut waiting to happen. Why not go ahead and do it now and bring in a guy who could bolster your depth?
Now, I don't know all the details of Caldwell's release or what he'd be looking for from his new team. But from our perspective, I think it'd be a perfect move.

All very good points posted by Haynie as usual. I would be VERY much on board with us bringing him over and I think for the right price it would be a very smart move as well.
I was thinking about this when I heard he was released, the only knock about him is he drops alot balls, and yes more than TO. Also those bug eyes are really annoying.. :D

Bug Eyes...you crack me up Cowboyz Rule
You are correct that he is known for dropping catch-able balls here and there but we should be use to it now with T.O. on the team. :P Just a little rub thrown towards T.O.'s way. The thing I do like about Reche is he is a very good route runner and gets open a lot. He just has to hold onto the ball when he gets hit better. I still would love to have him on this team. I wonder if Wade will look his way since a while back he did have ties with the Chargers.

Definetely would be a good pick up. And an upgrade to the back-ups we have now.

if there was one player to pick up right at this moment besides a cb, i would have to vote for Leftwich. If only because i personally have no confidence in BJ as a decent fillin.

No to Caldwell....there's a reason he got cut. And it wasn't a cap issue.

If you know the exact reason as to why he was cut then by all means share it with us. Are you saying that you believe Austin is better than Reche right now? The reason I mention Austin is because he would in all likelihood be the one cut to bring in Reche if this became a reality. I can respect your opinion but I just don't see for the right price how he would not be an upgrade to the likes of Austin or maybe even Hurd for that matter. Now I would hate to lose Hurd but I would lose no sleep losing Austin.

No, you would cut Berger, who shouldnt even have made the team. I would be all for signing Caldwell, he's an ugly mofo, but as Haynie brought up, he's a solid 2 tier WR.
I bet he ends up in Jets uniform before this is all said and done....

I totally forgot about Berger. Helps make my point even better.

Yes, I would like to see Caldwell signed (esp. now that Glenn will be missing games) but as always, if the price is right. Here's a little career history:
"Caldwell was drafted in the 2002 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. In his rookie season he had 22 catches for 208 yards and three touchdowns, and returned nine kickoffs for 24.4-yard average. In 2003, he played in nine games with four starts for the Chargers and was inactive for seven games. He caught eight passes for 80 yards and rushed for 39 yards on five carries.
His 2004 season got off to a promising start, as he had caught three touchdowns in the first five games. But in a game against the Atlanta Falcons in week 6, he suffered a knee injury (ACL) and was lost for the season. He returned to play a full season in 2005, but his role was greatly reduced thanks to the addition of Keenan McCardell and the continued emergence of TE Antonio Gates.
Because he had fallen out of favor with the Chargers, they did not re-sign him when he became a free agent after the 2005 season. He was then signed by the New England Patriots in 2006. Thanks to the offseason departure of WR David Givens and a holdout and eventual departure of Deion Branch, Caldwell was the team's number one wide receiver for the 2006 season, with over 60 catches and 700 yards on the season.
Caldwell had perhaps the game of his career against his former team in the Patriots' 24-21 victory over his former team the Chargers on January 14, 2007 in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. Caldwell had 7 receptions for 80 yards, including his four yard touchdown reception from quarterback Tom Brady in the fourth quarter that eventually led to a tying two-point conversion. On September 3, 2007 the Pats cut him."

I would agree that he would be a step above Austin and possibly Hurd... but only for the right money..

I would not have a problem bringing reche in for the right price. Who is berger by the way...

Only reason why he was cut was because they would have taken a Bigger hit (Cap wise) by letting go their 1st rounder of a couple yrs ago Chad Jackson...I think that's what his name is

one good reason I can think of is the fact they have moss, stallworth, and walker?
