View Full Version : What is up with our Special Teams?

I don't know if our Special Team guys are sleeping out their on the field but they better wake up because they look awful.
There is no excuse pre-season or not for the effort and play they have shown us especially in last nights game.

The special teams allowed a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jacoby Jones just 1:59 into the game, and Martin Gramatica hurt his roster chances by pushing a point-after attempt wide and skulling a kickoff.

We need some big time work in this area before we meet the Giants.

ST has not been good this whole preseason, and I'm not sure that Bruce Read is getting the job done there. Gramatica is outta here, he missed a XPT, that's crappy, and now he has a hamstring injury.

You can throw Jacques Reeves in the "outta here" group. And, Spears really needs to start producing. I know it's preseason, but he is still a non-factor.

Yeah, Spears is the same Spears from last year, he fits better in a 4-3. We should trade Spears for a CB. Hatcher is the man at DE in my opinion. Hatcher returning back from his hamstring injury looked alot more active than Spears did...

I agree with you guys...it appears like Gramatica is the kicker in the dog house right now. Nick just might win this.

Folk seems pretty competent.Lose Grammatica and keep spot open for Ellis.

Gramatica and Reeves will not cut it in my opinion. That late penalty on Reeves was costly. I know its preseason but those in-state rivalries are important to me even in the preseason. Here is to hoping they get the wrinkles ironed out.

Keep in mind that they're experimenting with a lot of different guys on special teams coverage during the preseason. A lot of the guys who were on that unit last year aren't getting to same time now because of other players getting looks. I'd say at this rate, though, none of these new guys are going to be sticking around. I expect very little turnover from last year's roster.

I was thinking the same thing Haynie. I think outside of Spencer and Stanback the rest are long shot's if any. Guys like Reeves I'm not sure about either. A guy like Joey Thomas I'd like to see a little more of.

Joey Thomas! This kids name just seems to keep coming up don't it? I will go out on a limb here and say the Boys keep him around and that is what I want to happen because I really like the guy.

The ONLY way I keep Spears on this team is as a backup NT. Hatcher has earned that spot.

Yeah, I think Joey Thomas makes this team. He might even take Glenn's #3 spot. Either way, we are keeping Glenn.

I know it is still early but I too do not see a big improvement out of Spears like I had hoped. He is out of excuses now and needs to step it up or step aside and let Hatcher take a shot at it. Again...I know it is still early and I won't overreact yet but I am concerned with what I am not seeing from Spears so far.

special teams have been looking more like special olympians out there. I like Thomas too I think he stays.
