EAST – ROUND ONE

#1 Boston Celtics vs. #8 Atlanta Hawks
It sucks that teams like Golden State and Portland have to sit at home while sub-.500 squads like Atlanta and Philly get to compete in the Playoffs. Not only is it unfair to the players and fans left out, but it’s unfair to the field as the Celtics and Pistons get virtual bye weeks because these clowns are allowed into the tournament. The NBA needs to fix a lot of things, but this situation is near the top of the list.
Prediction: Celtics in four

#4 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #5 Washington Wizards
This is definitely the best series in the East for the first round, both from a talent standpoint and the build-up of trash talk that’s been going on with Gilbert Arenas. LeBron is clearly the lead dog in this series, but the trio of Arenas, Caron Butler, and Antawn Jamison will be difficult for the Cavs to overcome. The regular season series was a 2-2 split, and the Wiz were without Arenas for all four games. I think he’ll be the difference-maker here.
Prediction: Wizards in six

#3 Orlando Magic vs. #6 Toronto Raptors
This isn’t the worst matchup in the world, but it’s definitely Orlando’s to lose. Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh cancel each other out, which leaves Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis as the swing factor that should push the Magic to victory. I like Jose Calderon a lot for the Raptors, but I just don’t see them having enough firepower to last in this series.
Prediction: Magic in five

#2 Detroit Pistons vs. #7 Philadelphia 76ers
You might be surprised to learn that the Pistons and Sixers split their season series 2-2. Even more interesting is the fact that Philly has won the last two games, including one in Detroit. However, this really is no indication of how these teams truly stack up to each other. The Pistons have been on cruise control all year, particularly the second-half. It’s not hard for a hustling, hard-work team like the Sixers to win those kind of games. But now that it’s do-or-die time, the Pistons will be awake and will make short work of them.
Prediction: Pistons in five

WEST – ROUND ONE

#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #8 Denver Nuggets
On paper, this actually looks like one of the toughest possible matchups for the Lakers. Allen Iverson always gives L.A. trouble. Carmelo Anthony is too strong for Kobe and too fast for Odom. Throw in Marcus Camby defending Pau Gasol, and it would seem that Denver has an edge here. However, the Lakers have blossomed as a team greater than the sum of its parts, and the Nuggets are underachievers considering their talent level. Sounds like the difference between a Phil Jackson-coached team and George Karl, doesn’t it? The Lakers averaged almost 120 points in three games against Denver this year. With L.A.’s defense now the best it’s been all year, Denver has no chance of matching that kind of scoring output.
Prediction: Lakers in five

#4 Utah Jazz vs. #5 Houston Rockets
Home court advantage means different things for different teams, but it means more to Utah than anyone else in the league. They would probably win this series without it, but it’s the difference between a seven game slugfest or a shorter, simpler victory. The Jazz have too many horses for the Rockets to keep up. While the rest of the year has spoken to the contrary, this will be a time that Houston actually misses Yao Ming.
Prediction: Jazz in five

#3 San Antonio Spurs vs. #6 Phoenix Suns
The Suns have won both meetings against San Antonio since the Shaq trade, the most recent a 96-79 stomping just a week ago. Normally you can’t put much stock in anything that happens in the regular season with the Spurs, but that game took place during the last few weeks when the Spurs normally are getting into title-run form. On the emotions of what happened in last year’s playoffs plus the addition of Diesel, Phoenix will deliver the knockout blow to the Spurs season and, I believe, their dynasty.
Prediction: Suns in six

#2 New Orleans Hornets vs. #7 Dallas Mavericks
Chris Paul versus Jason Kidd is probably the best individual matchup of the whole first round. The problem for New Orleans is that the Mavericks’ best player is a seven-foot German who’s been playing with the eye of the tiger since Kidd arrived. To the Hornets credit, David West can do his own damage on the offensive end and Tyson Chandler can do a good job defending Dirk Nowitski. This promises to be a great series, and I would be surprised by either team winning. In the end, I’m going with the Mavs as I think Dirk will carry his team and remind everyone that he’s still one the elite players in the league.
Prediction: Mavericks in seven

EAST – ROUND TWO

#1 Boston Celtics vs. #5 Washington Wizards

The Celtics only lost 16 games all season. Guess what? Three of those losses came to the Wizards. After a blowout victory on their opening night against the Wiz, Boston has dropped every game since. This is due to two key factors. First, Jamison and Butler have been playing at All-Star levels all year and present key matchup problems for Boston. Second, Washington’s defense is very underrated. This actually is an area where Arenas’ return hurts them as Antonio Daniels is a much better defender. You can always bring Daniels off the bench, though, and Arenas still gives them a dynamic scorer that can open up things for the rest of the team. Call me crazy, but I smell an upset.
Prediction: Wizards in seven

#2 Detroit Pistons vs. #3 Orlando Magic

This series will be all about one man, Rasheed Wallace. The Pistons can run Orlando off the floor if they go small with Wallace taking Dwight Howard outside. You also have to like Chauncey Billups in his matchup with Jameer Nelson. If Wallace doesn’t show up, then it could be trouble for Detroit. That’s true in every series they play, though. The Pistons have beaten better teams than this during their years of Eastern Conference dominance, and this one will be no different.
Prediction: Pistons in six

WEST – ROUND TWO

#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #4 Utah Jazz

While the Lakers’ strength this year has been Kobe’s newfound ability to trust and involve his teammates, this series is a time when he can show off his individual greatness. The Jazz have nobody capable of checking Bryant one-on-one, and you can be sure the Lakers will look to exploit that fact as much as possible. On the other side, Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur present problems for the Lakers’ bigs. This would be a great time to get Andrew Bynum back. Even without him, though, you have to like the Lakers to take the series with their home court advantage and the presence of Kobe.
Prediction: Lakers in six

#6 Phoenix Suns vs. #7 Dallas Mavericks

It’s always a fun time when Steve Nash gets to play his old team. I don’t know if Dallas would agree though, especially considering the friends that Nash brings with him. While the focus will be on Nash, the key to this series is Amare Stoudemire and the Mavs having nobody who can guard him. Throw in Shaq’s presence inside, and you just can’t see Dallas being able to withstand the offensive attack. I don’t even think it will be that close.
Prediction: Suns in five

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

#2 Detroit Pistons vs. #5 Washington Wizards

I have to admit, I’m a little nervous about not having the Celtics involved here. But you have to look at each round on its own merits and I am convinced that Washington can get it done. That said, I think the Wizards will be in trouble here. The Pistons match up with them in all the ways that Boston does not, with Billups, Wallace, and Tayshaun Prince countering Arenas, Butler, and Jamison. Then you’ve got Richard Hamilton going to work, a clear edge factor for Detroit. Throw in a deeper bench and home court, you just can’t see Washington winning the majority of these games. In fact, I’m only giving them two.
Prediction: Pistons in six

WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #6 Phoenix Suns

With his ultimate dream of a Celtics/Lakers Finals out the window, David Stern will settle for this titanic clash. While the moronic media will focus on the Kobe vs. Shaq angle, it’s a very small factor in how this series will play out. The days of Raja Bell being able to check Kobe are over. Lamar Odom is a matchup problem for Phoenix as the only guy who could check him in the past now plays in Miami. This series should be a major scoring affair and should be a classic. In the end, I’m going with the team with the best single player.
Prediction: Lakers in seven

NBA FINALS

Detroit Pistons vs. Los Angeles Lakers

These two teams met twice this year, splitting the series with wins on their own floors. Both games took place before the Pau Gasol trade, so that creates a very big wrinkle in trying to predict the series. The two starting lineups will wash each other out with similar overall stats and impact. The key here will be the bench, and the Lakers have the league’s best reserves. The running style that Jordan Farmar, Sasha Vujacic, Luke Walton, and Ronny Turiaf bring to the floor will be too much for the AARP squad that comes off Detroit’s bench with guys like Lindsey Hunter and Antonio McDyess. The Lakers are by far the NBA’s most complete team going into the playoffs, and as the Spurs have proven many times now, that team is usually the last one standing.
Prediction: Lakers in six

LOVE your predictions Haynie! Lovin the lakers winning it all. I swear I will do something crazy if they winn. Which they will as they are playing like beasts. Flawless picks and I dont have anything to add.

The east is weak, with only Boston and Detroit. Soooo much easier to make it in the east than the west! Man! they need a crossover cause the east sucks!!!!!

It is interesting for the Detroit pick, but Detroit is a good team so I will go with that.

MY PREDICTION: LAKERS WIN THE WHOLE THING! THEN WE HAYNIE, PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Game 1 is in the books and the Lakers win 128-114. Overall a so-so game and could be played better. They dominated the second half but I would like to see a better whole game like extend the success in the second half to both halves. Also play BETTER defense, as 36 points for Denver in the 4th qtr is horrible! They need to work on that for Wednesday! However they did win be the largest margin for West teams against a 50 win team but It is great that they won by 14 and the best part is they did not play their A game. Nor did Kobe! 9-25 is not good but still got 32 points. Also Gasol did EXCELLENT, as did Lamar and the passing was superb. Lets hope that they can do well 2 says from now!

I agree that they didn't play up to their potential, but I think they know they've got Denver's number and it's hard to be at your best when you don't respect your opposition. They'll probably end up losing one in Denver as a result. But all in all, it was a great game for us. While Gasol had the numbers, I thought Odom was the player of the game with his overall effort and the way he seemed to always get the ship back on course when things started to turn the Nuggets' way.

Totally agree Haynie. Odom was the MVP of the game IMO. He was a beast and playing like a leader out there. Denver hasn't got a chance in hell IMO.

Well, so far LeBron is making me look almost as stupid as the Wizards. What a freak of nature!

I hope you guys got to see that first Suns/Spurs game. It was easily one of the best games I've ever seen in 15 years of avid basketball fandom.

So the Lakers win again and with a better game played but again not their best, but it does not matter as the Lakers have this series. Bring on Utah. I like that match up!

one more thing Kobe 4 MVP and Finals MVP!!! 49 points and Walton finally looking like a good player, 18 points!

Well it is a wrap folks. The Lakers complete the sweep in an dominant series for the Lakers. Now it is time for some rest to get ready for the next round against Utah or Houston (most likely Utah). This sweep is the first for the Lakers since 2002. Not many predicted the Lakers to sweep but it happened which is a good sign if they can keep this up and come out with more intensity against tougher teams in the upcoming rounds. Phil is a good coach and I believe that he will keep the team in line to play better as the rounds go on. That is what previous Laker teams have done and the end result for most of those was a championship (200, 01, 02). I hope that another is coming up.

Also What about Boston guys. series tied at 2-2!? Wow!

Game 1 has come and gone for the second round match up between the Lakers and Jazz. Again like the first game against Denver the Lakers did not play their best. However The still won by 11 points which is good and their fifth playoff game in a row (5-0 in the playoffs so far). However the rebounding had killed the lakers and the second chance points, well too many where given up to the Jazz. Hopefully the Lakers can play better on the boards and play a better game. It got too close there in the 4th quarter but luckily the Lakers woke up to take game 1 of this best of 7 series. Also the Lakers need to stay out of foul trouble as well. Play more calm and continue to play hard throughout the game so 19 point leads dont go down to 4 point leads.

None the less the Lakers won and it is time to step it up in game 2 on wednesday!

There's some reason for concern right now as the series goes back to Utah. As well as the Lakers have played offensively, they've been pretty weak on defense and have allowed the Jazz to stay in games despite not playing all that well. While homecourt advantage means they can afford to lose every game in Salt Lake and still advance, I hate that scenario. The Jazz are good enough to steal game on the road. I'm just hoping that the Lakers continue to play as well on the road as they have all season and goes finish this one in four or five games.

Damn that game was sooooo tough especially with an injured back for Kobe. Damn and Sasha was soooo off that well no need to say but he was bad. None the less the lakers won game 5 and haynie you where right about there needing for concern going back to Utah for games 3 and 4 they did not play well nor did the refs in those games. So many no calls. i hope this does not happen on Friday as I will lose it if they lose game 6 which I hope does not happen! I am going to have a heart attack with this team. Why is it that all my teams try to kill me? First it is the Cowboys with their close games and now it is the lakers with their games!!!!!!!!!!

I think it was HUGE for the team to win the game in Utah and not let it go to seven. Not so much for the vets like Kobe and Fisher, but I think it's great for the confidence for the rest of the team who's never been down this playoff road before. They handled their business and closed the series out in one of the toughest road environments there is. It's a major confidence boost.

I've already mentioned him once, but I can't say enough about Lamar Odom. Talk about a guy who was so close to letting his career slip away from him only to turn it around and blossom as a player. He always seems to bring a stabilizing effect to the team whenever he's out there, both with his rebounding and the way he handles the offense when Kobe is on the bench. I don't know if even Phil Jackson could have known how good the Gasol trade would be for Odom as the pressure it took off Lamar to be the number-two guy on the team seems to have opened up his entire game.

Yeah it was a great game. I think it shows a lot of Character on the Lakers part to go in there and pull out the series win. I was on the edge of my seat. I mean the Lakers had the Jazz down by 19 points going into the 2nd half. The Jazz made a hell of a rally to pull within 2 in the final Min of the game. Now Kobe gets to rest his back for a few days to wait to see if they match- up against the Spurs or New Orleans. I'll tell you one thing. Odom and Gasol did a hell of a job shutting down the lane for most of the game. That was impressive to me.

They totally shut down Utah's pick and roll and they really could not get anything working until their late rally. The Lakers did a fantastic job out there.

Question... who do you guys want to play between the Spurs or Hornets?

It's a tough one for me. On one hand, I'd love to see the Lakers take it to the Spurs. I hate San Antonio. I hate Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Bowen. They even took Horry, one of my all-time favs, and made him a villain. It would be very joyful to watch the Lakers crush these guys and end their dynasty.

Then again, I'd also like to see Kobe vs. Chris Paul in a battle of the two MVP candidates from this year. You know both guys would be looking to prove themselves on that basis, so the performances would be intense.

In the end, I think I have to go with the Spurs just out of the sheer emotion of that series for me.

electrochemical
05-19-2008, 10:14 PM
Yea the Upurs are old and slow they would be the easier of the 2 teams. The Hornets are young and dont have much experience and I can see them making some big mistakes against a stronger more calm laker squad because of Phil. With Phil on the team even the young guys look like they have experience. I think the lakers can beat both.

I hate the Spurs though and would love to see the Lakers tear the Spurs up!!!!!!!!!

But I also think it would be cool to see the 2 most unlikely teams make it to the WCF and play each other. As I am sure no one thought the Hornets or Lakers would make it this far. So I think that would be good too.

In the end it does not matter much to me. I just want to see a return to the NBA finals for the Lakers.

Haynie
05-20-2008, 12:03 AM
I'll tell you what scares me about the Hornets. For years, the Lakers have had a bad habit of allowing opposing teams' point guards to go off. It was in playoff series against the Lakers that guys like Tony Parker and Mike Bibby had their breakout performances. Just look at what Deron Williams did in the last round. With Chris Paul already looking like the greatest PG since Isaiah and Magic, I shudder to think what he could accomplish against us.

I've always found it amazing that this happens considering that, man-on-man, Derek Fisher is a great defender. I think it's something about the way Phil runs defensive schemes that must allow these PGs to have big games, because I think Fisher does a nice job against his man when he's just playing straight-up.

electrochemical
05-20-2008, 04:23 AM
Well it is another Lakers Spurs series. I hope the Lakers can take care of the Spurs. I think as long as the lakers keep on doing what they have done all season. Run the ball and shoot well they should be able to win this series. I cant help but feel worried or scared about the Spurs though as I hope the lakers are very prepared for this tough team in the defending champs.

I saw some bad things the Hornets did in todays game as they where letting all the 3 point shooters wide open for easy threes like Bowen and Horry. The Lakers should look out for than and like I said RUN the court please.

Please Lakers WIN THE SERIES!!!!!

Haynie
05-22-2008, 03:51 AM
Man, what a win! Down by 20, Kobe puts the team on his back in true MVP fashion. This wasn't even close to the best that Odom, Gasol, and Fisher can play, but still they win the game. OWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

electrochemical
05-22-2008, 01:43 PM
Haynie I completely know what you are feeling as I feel it as well. What a comeback the Lakers did!!! Down 20 to the defending champs and they still win it. This win comes with not the best performances of Odom, Gasol, and Fisher!!!!! Kobe is the best and that is all that is needed to say!!

Also great job to Sasha for hitting 2 of the toughest free throws he has made so far!!!

05-24-2008, 02:37 PM
Yeah that was a great game last night. Did you see Jordon Farmer Bitch slap that ball for a defensive stop last night. That was awesome. Lamar Odom flushing the alley-oop pass from Pau Gasol -- with one hand! Freaking amazing. Lamar also had a hell of a block on Robert Horry as well. We have a bunch of shooting Studs I'll tell you. Farmer put up 14 Pts. Fisher put up 11 Pts. Kobe 22 Pts and Lamar 20 Pts. Lamar is just impressing the hell out of me. He showed why he is a matchup nightmare in last nights game. Working over several Spurs, Lamar operated inside, making short shots and getting to the line. He also was a factor on the defensive end with 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Can't wait till the next game. I am pumped.

GO LAKERS!

electrochemical
05-24-2008, 04:10 PM
I have to agree with you Adam. An excellent game played by the Lakers. I am very glad to see Farmer get a good game again! Odom was a beast in the game. Man has he played great in the payoffs!!!

Game 3 is an important game as the Lakers will be playing in San Antonio. I hope they play even better there.

I guess I should have put J/K at the end of my post. LOL I'm still very confident in the Lakers...Don't worry. Don't believe for a second that I did not expect the Spurs to win at leat 1 game. As much as I don't like the Spurs...they are a very good team.

Haynie
05-26-2008, 07:22 PM
I don't like the way they're playing defense at all. I think it's too cute when they really need to just man up and force Duncan to beat them. That also leads me to wonder what's happened to Chris Mihm. I would think he'd be a natural for this series as our only true center with Bynum hurt. I guess he must still be injured, though you have to wonder what's going on with the guy since he's been out for over a year. I'd even say give Mbenga some more minutes in just straight-up defense on Duncan. I love Gasol, but he's just not strong enough a defender both in his physical strength or in his actual technique.

electrochemical
05-27-2008, 04:08 AM
I completely agree Haynie that Gasol seems a bit weak. He is 7 feet and he could do much better, he is too soft and lacks strength, that is why the Lakers need Bynum back! Too bad the injury was more serious that once thought at least he had the surgery now and should be good come next year, WE NEED HIM!

Anyway I still like the Lakers, they where the first sports team that I started to like in my life (9 years) Cowboys 7 years, before all that I never watched sports. If I stayed a fan in the last 3 years I think I can handle this loss no matter how hard it was for me to take. I always over react after a loss or for this matter a huge beat down, and the way they lost I doubt they could have played any better than they did.

Below 50% FT, below 50% fg/3pt and no one played well, yes Kobe even you Everyone just sucked on Sunday and I hope they put out a better effort as well as hold the low scoring Spurs below 50%fg/3pt which they certainly did NOT do on Sunday. I so badly want a 3-1 series lead not another 2-2 series tie again. 2-2 makes this series look too much like the Hornets series against the Spurs and we know what the Spurs did.

I HATE THE SPURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

POETIC JUSTICE!!!!!! The refs where against the Lakers all game with no calls and all and at the end they do not call that last foul which was only 2fts by the way! The Lakers should have won by 10+ points if the game was called right. #@CK all the haters who will blame the refs for the Spurs loss, the refs kept them in the game and should have been not that close also the ball hit the rim before it hit Horrys foot so game over then. SO this is what I call POETIC JUSTICE!!!

05-30-2008, 03:52 PM
Yes you did Adam.

I have a question. The Lakers will play either Boston or Detroit. It looks like Boston will win that series in 6 or 7 games. I know that regular season stats mean nothing as the lakers where tied with the spurs 2-2 in the season but got swiftly dismissed by the Lakers in 5 games only winning 1 game.

In the season the Lakers where 0-2 to the Celtics losing both games in 2007 before the team became more of a power as during that time they where still building and till unsure if they where a good team, before confidence.
Now they have had a good payoffs so far at 12-3 playing all tough teams but the record would not show that. Boston is 11-8 so far playing much easier teams in Atlanta and Cleveland both series went to 7 games to teams who would not have made the playoffs in the west. The Lakers need to keep playing at a high level and continue to play better. The finals is the series that all teams in any sport want to be in. 4 wins is the magic number and Phil and Kobe and Fisher and Walton know what it is like to lose there. I know what it is like from my perspective and it sucks. Waste of a season of no championships are won. We have heard it here for the Cowboys it is no different for the Lakers who dont raise West championship banners in the Staples centre. Only NBA championship banners. The Job is not done yet. Phil will do what he does best, get the team ready for the task at hand and so will Kobe. They have a week to rest and regroup, study game film, practice, improve, and raise intensity level.

As for the Pistons I dont think the Lakers will see them so there is no need to talk about them. It is a Boston Lakers final and I hope the Lakers can do it. I want to see a championship again as I will enjoy it more than I did in 00, 01, 02. GO LAKERS THERE IS MORE WORK TO BE DONE!!!!!!

Yep, it's Cetlics vs. Lakers and I couldn't be happier. Everyone's making a big deal about the Lakers being 0-2 against Boston this year, but both of those games occurred before the Gasol trade. This is a completely different Laker squad now. Not only do you have the changes in the starting lineup with Gasol's presence and Odom's blossoming into a game-changer, but you know also have the confidence and chemistry of the bench squad. Guys like Vujacic and Radmanovic are playing their best ball right now.

Meanwhile, Boston is not the same team they were during the regular season. They've lost the momentum that a 66-win season would usually give. "The Big Three" has become a major question mark as Garnett has been shrinking in fourth quarters, Pierce seems to be banged up, and Allen looks like an old man. Cassell has not given Boston what they were looking for when they picked him up. Now you've also got players like Rondo, Perkins, House, Allen, and Powe who all have never touched anything like the NBA Finals.

Oh yeah... and it's Doc Rivers vs. Phil Jackson. Need I say more?
