Taken from Chumpy in the other thread:

since, the dolphins will pursue adams to be their next LT, the phins will go defense with the first pick of the draft. imo, they could go in 2 directions; DE or NT. they are in need of both. imo, glenn dorsey has been falling faster than the pants of brittany spears' date on any given night. miami also covets the skills of last year's qb selection in john beck. it is way too early to select a LB here. they do not need a RB since they have a stable full of them. their is no WR that is worthy of this high a selection. with the age of jason taylor and the recent release of keith traylor, it makes the most sense to select either chris long or sedrick ellis. after using the full 15 minutes (or whatever it is now), you will hear...

with the first selection of the 2008 nfl draft, the miami dolphins select.................DE from the U. of Va, Chris Long.

SmilesAustin
02-26-2008, 03:04 AM
with the second selection of the 2008 nfl draft, the St Louis Rams select.................Jake Long, OT University of Michigan

Marc Bulger had a horrible season, being sacked 37 times in just 12 games. An average of 3 sacks per game is unacceptable. In order for St Louis' offense to start clicking again, they will need to protect the quarterback better. Jake Long may not be the best player available at this position, but he is the best player available that meets a St Louis need.

With the 3rd pick of the 2008 NFL Draft...The Falcons Pick...................Matt Ryan, QB Boston College

Sure the case could be made for Jake Long (But he's gone in the 2nd pick) or even Darren McFadden here but you have to believe the Falcons will be looking for a top signal caller to build around with this pick. There's still some debate as to whether or not Matt Ryan is a franchise guy but he is the consensus top quarterback available which means he will likely go very high. Maybe even a little higher than he should. In terms of physical tools Ryan is at least adequate across the board but where he separates himself from the pack are with his intangibles, which are top-notch. They don't call him "Matty Ice" for nothing.

With the 4th pick of the 2008 NFL Draft...The Chiefs Pick...................Glenn Dorsey, DT LSU

Make no mistake, if Chris Long is still on the boards, the Chiefs will snatch him up in a heartbeat. Larry Johnson had a miserable season, and Brody Croyle/Damon Huard had horrible seasons, largely due to having little time in the pocket to make decisions. Ryan Clady is another possibility, because their offensive tackle position is of serious need.

That being said, I don't think the Chiefs could pass up on Glenn Dorsey at this point. He is largely ranked as the #2 or even #1 prospect overall on most boards, and the Chiefs could use some help on their defensive line. You usually can't say this about anyone, but Glenn Dorsey is a steal at the #4 pick.

Truly...with the 7th pick...The New England Patriots select Vernon Gholston, DE - Ohio St. - Then quickly move him to Outside Linebacker.

A physical marvel and fantastic pass rusher, Gholston played defensive end for the Buckeyes but should be able to make the successful transition to outside linebacker in a 34 scheme at the pro level.

With the 8th pick in the NFL 2008 Draft...The Raven select: Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville

There have been rumors that the Ravens are talking with the Eagles about trading for Donovan McNabb, but so far both teams have denied those rumors, and it's been reported that Steve McNair will return to start for the Ravens in 2008.

The Ravens only have one major free-agent-to-be, DE/OLB Terrell Suggs, and Baltimore will use its franchise tag to retain him. And, with the Ravens having so much difficulty performing on offense, a new coach coming in to replace Brian Billick, and Steve McNair turning 35 next month, a quarterback like Brohm would be a great addition to the team. Why Brohm over Andre Woodson? Some have suggested that Brohm will need less prep time to become a starter, which is not an unreasonable belief given that Brohm could have been a first rounder had he come out last year. Brohm also has a quicker release than Woodson.

With the 9th pick in the NFL 2008 Draft...The Cincinatti Bengals select: Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State

With all the All-Stars on the Cincinatti offense, the Bengals should enjoy much better production and much better success. It was surprising that they finished the season ranked 10th in offense. In the 11 games that their star tailback Rudi Johnson played in, he averaged only 2.9 yards per carry and totalled only 3 rushing touchdowns. Ryan Clady should be able to anchor their offensive line and give Carson Palmer more time in the pocket, and give Rudi Johnson some better blocking next season.

(Remember, ANYONE can join in on this. You don't necessarily have to add a long description to your decision like most of us have. Please feel free to jump in and make a pick! There are no wrong answers here and I'm sure we will do this more than once before draft time.)

With the 10th pick...New Orleans selects...Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida

Regarded as one of the nation's premier shutdown pass defenders, Jenkins teamed with Trae Williams to give the Bulls an outstanding cornerback combination.

So how many RB's are going in the first round? What teams above the Cowboys need and are targeting a RB in round 1?

I do think that Mendenhall will fall to #22.

It appears that every year that the eagles are in need of a WR. That position will have to be filled in either thru FA or the draft. The college star, Mario Mannigham would be tempting for them here. They will quickly dismiss his disappointing performance at the Combine. However, they unlikely will go WR here especially since Jackson and Kelly are gone. They may address this later on in the draft or possibly go after Bernard Berrian or Donte Stallworth via FA. Since their 2 previous major FA pickups, Jevon Kerse and Darren Howard, are now officially BUSTS, they could go with a DE here. DE's Derrick Harvey and Phillip Merling will also wet their taste buds at this spot. Harvey has crept up the draft charts recently and I would think that he would get the nod. Philly is in need of S help since Brian Dawkins has been injured and is aging AND their other S is young, but suspect. However, since Phillips is gone, they will quickly forget that way of thinking. CB could be a possibility here especially if the rising star Leodis McKelvin is still here at 19. Aqib Talib is a good CB left as well. Their CB's have let them down for the past 2 years giving big plays. OT would be interesting for them. Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas are aging and they would be replacement, Winston Justice, just got mauled in his only start of '07. This draft has loads of quality OT's. However, since Long, Otah, Clady and Williams are gone and Sam Baker not being value here, they will go elsewhere.

If this were the scenario come draft day the Eagles would mull long and hard over Harvey and McKelvin. Weighing their STR's and NEEDS and since they went DL last year, AND since IMO, this guy could be a real star in this league....

With the 19th pick, the Philadelphia Eagles select.....Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy State.

Yeah I think Arizona would take Mendenhall in a heartbeat if he were available. They love Edgerrin James, and Mendenhall is an Edgerrin James clone. That's okay though, we'll do this thing a few more times before the draft comes up.

Looks like Sandtrap's gunna get Mendenhall anyways! I really hope it would pan out like that. Like I said earlier, Mendenhall is THE back I would want in the 1st round. If we weren't going to take Mendenhall then I gotta go Chris Johnson.

I'll make a pick later tonight when I get home from work.

With the 20th pick in the NFL 2008 Draft....Tampa Bay selects...James Hardy, WR Indiana

With Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard aging, the Bucs have a clear need at WR. Lima Sweed was Gruden's Target of choice. With Sweed, Jackson and Malcom all gone they are forced to look at a player that has moved up in the draft since the Combine. James Hardy would be a good addition in Tampa Bay, and would likely take the spot of Maurice Stovall.

With the 25th pick...the Seattle Seahawks select...Fred Davis, TE USC

Pros: Very productive player at USC and is athletic enough to line up as a receiver. Good hands and will be a great factor in the red zone.

Cons: Not the best route runner and might not stand out at first glance. Needs to be more of a factor between the 20's.

Overall: Davis was orginally recruited as a receiver but later made the switch to Tight End. He could create match up problems in the NFL because of his good blend of size and speed. Has 1st round talent and comes from a pro style offense.

With the 30th pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select: Keith Rivers, OLB Southern Cal.

It would be very surprising to see Keith Rivers last this late in the draft, as he is the top ranked outside linebacker, and ranked #9 overall (all positions) at CBS Sportsline and in that range by many other analysts. Everyone knows the Packers have a great linebacker in AJ Hawk, but on the other end Brady Poppinga was an average player at best. 50 tackles and zero stats; that kind of production out of Poppinga suggests the Packers need an upgrade. If Keith Rivers were actually available at this point, which again I highly doubt, the Packers would select him in a heartbeat.

That wraps it up.

Good draft everyone. I think a few of the picks were a little backwards, but then again nobody will know for sure until the first day of the draft is over. I don't believe for a second that Rashard Mendenhall will last to our 22nd pick (though I would be completely enthused if he did). I think the Cardinals would take him over Felix Jones because Mendenhall was a feature runner for his college team, and he is also 10 pounds heavier (1 inch shorter) and ran a faster 40 time at the combine than Jones. He plays a lot like Edgerrin James and the Cardinals love that guy.

Dan Connor might go a little earlier. I could definitely see him as a top 20 pick, but I think the only reason he goes much earlier than the end of the first round is because the next best ILB prospect isnt projected until like the late 2nd round or later.

I hope we do this again in about a week or two. This would give teams a chance to sign the big name players, and this draft will look a whole lot different at that point.
