I hate to sound like a homer, but I have been watching Jamaal Charles play since pop warner in Port Arthur Texas, so if McFadden is gone by the time we pick I wont be mad. I will present some info some of my fellow Cowboys fans may not be prevy to, supporting why I think we should pick Jamaal.
Mike Hart, Michigan 7 1078 154.0
Ray Rice, Rutgers 8 1141 142.6
Jamaal Charles, Texas 9 1012 112.4
Darren McFadden, Arkansas 8 993 124.1

Dont get me wrong if Darren falls to us I would pick him in a heartbeat, But if not I would love to see a Homestate guy get the job....

First thing.. there is 22 teams with a record tied with or worse then Cleveland right now.. that would make their pick about 22.. If we continue to play like we are, our pick will be in the very high 20's.
I dont see McFadden falling that far in any way.
Second.. I dont think we will be going after a top tier running back anyway.. I believe WR or CB will be our direction in the Draft.

Well, I do agree that there are bigger needs than a RB. WR, CB and DT come to mind.
But Charles could easily fall far enough for us to get him. He would be a really good complement to Barber. (You will notice I left Julius out of the equation).
Barber is that bruising tough yards back. Charles is a speedster and a half. He is the REIGNING BIG 12 champion in the 100 meter dash and runs a 40 in the 4.2 to 4.3 range. The guy just plain screams.
Watch some of his highlights and you will see that once he gets to the secondary there is not a DB that can catch him.
His numbers fell a tad this season, but Texas lost 3 of thier 5 starting O-linemen to the NFL after last season. But still Charles continues to produce. You give him a line that will get him to the second level and into the secondary and he will take it the house 9 times out of 10.
I would not call him a feature back for an NFL team, but in a 1-2 combo, like with Barber it could be a lethat combination.
He is listed at 205 and may have to pack on 10 or so pounds, but that normally happens with a rookie coming to the NFL and playing football 365 days a year.

The way the Browns are playing, we don't have a top ten pick, maybe not even a top 20 right now. I like Charles, and I would love to see a premiere back in our backfield, but I won't be devastated if Barber becomes our featured guy

We don't need a premier back, just a good complement to MB3. Julius just is not getting it done and needs to go away.
Pound between the tackles with Barber, than stretch the defense with a speed guy around the edge, and by the 3rd quarter the opposing defense wil be panting like Secretariat on Derby Day.

Don't forget the RB I mentioned at the beginning of the season to keep an eye on. Steven Slaton out of Virginia. He is doing really well again this year. He would make a nice compliment to Barber. He run a lot like Barber. He is a tough RB to bring down. He punishes his tacklers.

We're gonna get Jonathen Stewart from Oregon. Most Texas RBs have all been disappointments.

I'm tellin ya, if we don't get MacFadden, there are no other backs worth taking before round 4. They are all over-hyped. Slaton, Rice, Hart, Stewart, etc. will all be average at best.

Come on Sweat here ya go again. There is just no way you know that for sure. Slaton has not shown that he is average at best. He is tearing it up in college. Now I know the NFL is a hole new ball game but you can't predict that they are all going to just be average at best before they are even given a shot.
No one (Besides Tag) ever predicted Barber would be as good as he's been coming into the NFL.
Now I will agree with you that there are to many backs worth taking besides McFadden in the 1st.

I am telling ya Charles is the truth, if he comes out this year he wont make it to the 4th round. But he wont be a first rounder either, only because the offensive coordinator at Texas is an idiot( he waited until the fourth quarter to run the ball on a horrible Nebraska run defense). Give this kid a good line and a fullback who is blind and this kid will create yards.

it's only my opinion of course. MacFadden would be big time.
Also, no one knows for sure what JJ will demand in a new contract, or get offered. But we know what a 1st or 2nd round pick will cost. Right now our two back system is working great. I see no reason to change it up or switch it it around with a marginal player. Only if we add a MacFadden, do I see the benefit. JJ and MBIII are doing a great job together. Unless we make a serious upgrade, why waste a draft pick?

Well I am only guessing here but I really have this feeling Julius will not be here next year. One of the reasons is because I really think he wants out of Dallas anyways. You can pick that up by the way he talks and the excuses he keeps throwing out. So that is why most people are saying we will probably go with a RB some time in the draft next year.

Good Memory Adam!
I wanted Barber before we even drafted him- watched him play here for the Gophers.... Only Minnesota boy here (I think)
Barber can be our many back, then we need a 'Westbrook' type of back with speed... The Cost of getting McFadden is too high- we would have to give up a good player or multi picks to grab him...We have higher needs at CB & WR which need to be addressed.... and maybe LT depending on Flo

I got roots in Minnesota!
Its impossible to know who's going to fail. Every year you get running backs that turn out really great. Any of those back you listed could end up tearing it up, Sweat. I really like Stewart and Slaton, they could turn out really great.

Yes to those preaching CB, WR, and DT.
we can get a speed RB in the 2nd or third rounds, like Chris Johnson or Donnie Avery, and who knows Felix or Slaton could drop also with Mendenhall rising.

I realize this is subject to change, but it was reported yesterday that Jamall Charles will not enter the NFL draft. He intends to return to Texas.

You are exactly right. He is amazing but is smart to go back. He could be the top RB next year.
I don't know if I really want Steve Slaton or not Adam. He was great last year but not really this year. He is fast but fast as in the 4.4 range. CJ runs a sub 4.3, I would rather have him. Also, I don't want someone that runs like Barber I want someone that is a change of pace.

Good advice BarberForPrez, and I can't stress enough that we want a good receiving back. A guy that can lay a quick block and be Romo's dump-off guy if he can't find anyone open. My favorite part about Chris Johnson is that he is a great receiving back. I can't even imagine dumping a short pass off to this guy and watching him juke his way around trying to pick up yards. He is blazing fast.
Either way though, a speed back is the way to go. I just think we need that speed back to also be very good a receiving.

Thanks. I really like CJ not sure if you have seen his stat line from last year but here it is:
1423 Yds Rushing 17 TDs 6.0 yds per carry 0 Fumbles
37 catches for 528 receiving Yds 6 TDs

I will wait until after the combine until I say whether or not I like steve slaton. But Jones would be great...assuming fumbles don't become an overwhelming problem.
